Digital cameras are confusing to a lot of new users. In this basic guide to digital camera technology we hope to try to give digital beginners at least some basis to use in deciding which digital camera is appropriate for them.
Digital cameras are still rather expensive, and the students MUST be taught proper handling and safety rules when using the camera. Do training with students one-on-one to ensure that they understand how to handle the camera. Digital cameras increase ISO speed by amplifying the signal– moving a given exposure to a lighter zone. For example, an exposure that would fall in zone 9 (in Table 1) at ISO 100 would be fall zone 8 at ISO 200 and zone 7 at ISO 400, etc.
Lens quality helps, and the larger image sensors in digital SLRs create more photo-authentic images (with better depth of field), and so on. But if I need to make a true poster-sized print, I’m going to reach for a 30-year-old SLR camera, load a $3 roll of 100-speed film in it, and make a photo. Lenses are important to, they are covered in our lenses section. Lens glass readily passes the UV-A near this boundary. How the CCD responds to the shorter wavelength UV-B and UV-C bands, I’m not sure, but the question is largely academic since these bands are poorly transmitted by glass lenses, coated or otherwise.
